The Centre for the Book is the unit of the National Library of South Africa. Its mission is to promote a South African culture of reading, writing and publishing in all local languages, and easy access to books for all South Africans.

The Centre advocates through its programmes the
importance of reading for the nation and is involved in coordinating, promoting
and encouraging book related activities in South Africa in all local languages. The Centre also
coordinates various events and functions such as poetry readings, conferences,
book launches, writing groups and writing workshops for teachers, youth and
children.
The Centre for the Book website, the Small
Publisher’s Blog, the Writer’s Network Blog and E-groups and newsgroups provide
daily sites for gathering and dissemination of information on books, reading,
writing, publishing, libraries, book-selling and related issues.
The Centre for the Book also provides venue hiring
services. There are three venues available for hire, the main hall which can
accommodate 190 people seated (cinema style), 300 standing and 120 (gala
dinner). The Committee Room which can accommodate 80 people seated (cinema
style), 120 standing for cocktail and 40 workshop style. There is also a Studio
which can accommodate 90 people seated (cinema style) and 60 workshop style.
